(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – On July 14, USA Boxing’s Board of Directors approved reforming the governance of USA Boxing to make it more streamlined, effective, and consistent with the best governed not-for-profit organizations in America. Under the new governance structure (proposed plan link below), USA Boxing’s Board will be reduced to 10 members. This governance reform will have to be approved by the USA Boxing Board of Governors, who will consider these important issues in a mid-August special meeting expected to be announced next week.
The new governance reform highlights will be comprised of the following:
- Chairperson and nine other seats will comprise the Board of Directors, with several serving as independent directors
- Four permanent committees
- The executive director position will become CEO, and the role of the CEO will be focused on the accountability for management of the organization
- The role of the Board will become focused on broad governance and oversight matters
- The 200-plus member Board of Governors will meet annually at the newly created USA Boxing General Membership Meeting where they will communicate with the new Board and CEO on issues of common concern and learn about the new initiatives and matters affecting the sport.
“This is a new day for USA Boxing and has been a long time coming. I am proud of my fellow Board members who saw the wisdom in making this important change for our sport,” said USA Boxing President Bill Meartz of Beaverton, Ore., “I am confident that this first step reflects the commitment of USA Boxing to becoming a model national governing body that focuses on athletes and their development and performances first and foremost. These changes, if adopted by the Board of Governors, will better position USA Boxing to regain its position of dominance in the sport of boxing.”
“I would like to thank the hard working members of the USA Boxing Governance Commission, which prepared this package of changes for the Board of Directors and Board of Governors to consider,” said USA Boxing Governance Commission Chair Tom Virgets of Annapolis, Md. “I know that these proposals reflect a careful balance of the interests of athletes, coaches, officials, LBCs, other member organizations, our management, the USOC, and our partners, and these changes have long been needed for our sport to move forward and return to its dominance.”
“This is an important day for the sport of amateur boxing in the United States,” said USA Boxing Interim Executive Director Ed Weichers of Colorado Springs, Colo. “These changes, when adopted by the Board of Governors, will give USA Boxing’s management the accountability needed to ensure that USA Boxing is responsive to the needs of its athletes, coaches, officials, LBCs, member organizations, and partners.”
The governance reform will need to be approved by USA Boxing’s Board of Governors next month at a special meeting that is being organized as of this writing. The details of the special Board of Governors meeting will be announced next week.
