COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - New York City recorded a sweep in USA Boxing's athlete of the month awards with Daniel Jacobs of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Eileen Kuwaye-Olszewski of New York, N.Y., both winning the athlete of the month awards.
Jacobs, who won the 2002 National Junior Olympic championships in June, went on to win the 2003 Junior Olympic International Invitational, June 28-July 7 in Alexandria, La. Jacobs was also named Outstanding Boxer at the international event after he defeated Darryl Parker, 15-9, in his semifinal bout before winning on a first round retirement over Quincy Lockhart of the Bahamas. The event was Jacobs' last as a Junior Olympic athlete as the 16-year-old will soon move on to the senior division.
Kuwaye-Olszewski was competing in her final Women's U.S. Championships, as the recently married boxer will be 35 at the time of the 2004 U.S. Championships. Yet she went out with a bang, winning her third straight national championship title on the sunny beaches of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., July 6-13. She began the event by defeating Emily Kelly in the first round 19-4 before knocking off hometown girl Marisol Miranda in the quarterfinal round, 19-1. The New York boxer won her semifinal bout over Maria Cash, 10-3 and went on to take the championship with a 4-1 victory over Karen Davis.
She was honored after the tournament for her outstanding run over the past three years and her commitment and dedication the sport of women's boxing.
Both Jacobs and Kuwaye will now be entered into the running for USA Boxing's athlete of the year award.
Andre Berto of Winter Haven, Fla., was chosen as USA Boxing's nomination to the United States Olympic Committee for the USOC athlete of the month award. Berto recently won a bronze medal at the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. Berto won three bouts en route to his bronze medal, defeating Rolandas Jasevicius of Lithuania, 29-22, in the first round, stopped Mezga Badzim of Bulgaria in the second round, and defeating Darren Barker of England, 24-22 in the quarterfinals to advance to the medal rounds. He then lost to Cuban World Champion Lorenzo Aragon Armenteros in the semifinal bout to win the bronze medal.
