ANDRE WARD AND JILL EMERY HONORED AS 2004 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR BY USA BOXING
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward (Oakland, Calif.) and Women’s World Boxing Tournament Champion Jill Emery were named USA Boxing’s 2004 Athletes of the Year.

Ward became the first U.S. boxer to win Olympic gold at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The 20-year-old continued his six-year winning streak, recording strong victories over two former world champions to earn light heavyweight gold. Ward won gold at the 2004 Olympic Team Trials, Olympic Box-offs and Titan Games before earning Olympic gold.

Emery won gold at the 2004 Women’s World Boxing Tournament in the 138-pound division at the event in Tonsberg, Norway. Following her gold medal, Emery traveled at her own expense to a second event in Europe where she won a second straight gold medal.

In addition to their USA Boxing honor, Ward and Emery were nominated to the United States Olympic Committee for their Athlete of the Year honors.
