TEN OF THE NATION'S TOP AMATEUR BOXERS TRAVEL TO PUERTO RICO FOR THE 2005 CHEO APONTE TOURNAMENT
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -  Ten of the United States’ top amateur boxers traveled to Caguas, Puerto Rico on Sunday, May 29 for the 2005 Cheo Aponte Tournament, June 2-7. The boxers will face off with athletes from several North, Central and South American countries.

The team arrived in Puerto Rico early for the event which will begin on Thursday, June 2 following weigh-ins on Wednesday, June 1. The 10-athlete delegation is made up of 2005 Light Flyweight (106 lbs) National Champion Marco Rangel (Scottsdale, Ariz.); 2005 U.S. Championships flyweight (112 lbs) silver medalist Aaron Alafa (Visalia, Calif.); 2005 U.S. Championships featherweight (125 lbs) silver medalist Richard Baltazar (Lynwood, Calif.); 2005 U.S. Championships lightweight (132 lbs) silver medalist Jonathan Gover (San Antonio, Texas); 2005 Light Welterweight (141 lbs) National Champion Karl Dargan  (Philadelphia, Pa.); 2005 U.S. Championships silver medalist, competing at welterweight (152 lbs) Charles Hatley (Dallas, Texas); 2005 U.S. Championships middleweight (165 lbs) silver medalist Jonathan Nelson (Little Rock, Ark.); 2005 U.S. Championships light heavyweight (178 lbs) silver medalist Brandon Gonzales (Sacramento, Calif.); 2005 U.S. Championships heavyweight (201 lbs) silver medalist Homero Fonseca (Kingsville, Texas); and 2005 U.S. Championships super heavyweight (201+ lbs) silver medalist Travis Kauffman (Reading, Pa.)

The team is being led by head coach Israel Acosta (Milwaukee, Wis.) and assistant coaches Mario L’Esperance (Vacaville, Calif.) and Jose Rosario (Jersey City, N.J.). Bobby Lee (Reno, Nev.) will serve as the Team Manager for the event with Deborah Holmes (Garland, Texas) and Brent Venegas (Colma, Calif.) working as officials for the event and Dr. Rene Rodriguez (Elsa, Texas) serving as Team Physician.  

The United States has been competing in the Cheo Aponte Tournament for the past several years but it will be the first appearance for all ten athletes traveling to Puerto Rico. The event is the third international event of the year for USA Boxing’s Elite Team.
