After an outstanding afternoon of boxing in North Miami, Fla., Team USA and Belarus traveled north to Maryland, for a second installment of the dual at Michaels Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, Md.
Seven U.S. boxers took the ring at Michaels Eighth Avenue and 2004 Olympian Rau’shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio) opened the competition in a bantamweight match-up with Khavazhy Khatsyhau (Belarus). Warren opened with a combination of speed and power, dropping Khatasyhau to the canvas midway through the round. Despite having a mysterious point taken from the referee in the first round, Warren took a 5-3 lead after the first round. Warren continued landing clean, accurate punches in the second round, knocking the Belarusian back repeatedly to take a 11-6 lead midway through the bout. The theme continued in the third and fourth rounds and Warren moved out to a 24-13 decision over Khatasyhau.
Mark Davis (Cleveland, Ohio) joined his fellow Ohio native in grabbing wins at the USA vs. Belarus Dual. Davis took on Evgeny Kosmotov of Belarus in their contest and the bout stayed low scoring throughout. Kosmotov took a slim 2-1 lead after 1 round but Davis grabbed back the lead at the midway point, holding a 6-4 advantage after two rounds. Davis extended out to a 12-9 advantage after the third but Kosmotov pulled the bout to a 14-14 tie in the final minute of the bout. Davis managed to pull back in front over the final 30 seconds to win an 18-15 final decision.
David Clark (San Diego, Calif.) faced off with Sergey Kunitsyn (Belarus) in a featherweight contest and Kunitsyn pulled the dual to a 1-1 tie in their bout. Kunitsyn took the early lead in the bout and coasted through, winning a 41-11 decision over Clark.
Light welterweight Jeremy Bryan (Clifton, N.J.) took the ring in Glen Burnie looking to avenge his loss to Belarus’ Andrei Chyruk. Bryan kept the bout close through the first two rounds, unleashing several strong shots in the second round and giving Chyruk a standing eight count. Yet Chyruk built on his lead through the last two rounds and despite Bryan’s outstanding efforts, Chyruk won a 28-17 decion.
2005 World Championships silver medalist Magomed Nurudinov (Belarus) won a second round retirement victory over the game Jacey Thompson, Washington, D.C./USA. Nurudinov held a 6-2 lead after one round but began building up a lead in the second round, causing coach Barry Hunter to call a halt to the bout in the final seconds of the second round.
Light heavyweights Edwin Rodriguez (Worcester, Mass.) and Andrei Miruk (Belarus) boxed in a short, low-scoring bout. The two were dead-locked at 1 when a cut to Miruk caused a medical disqualification in the bout in the second round.
Mikhail Sheibak (Belarus) won a first round retirement over Matt Steenhoek (Baltimore, Md.) to end the event.
