THE 2006 CADET WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS TEAM OPENS TRAINING CAMP IN LAKE PLACID
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Thirteen of the nation’s top cadet (15 and 16-year-old) boxers are participating in a preparatory training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., June 16-29. The 2006 Cadet World Championships team will depart for Istanbul, Turkey on July 30 for a short acclimation camp in Turkey before opening competition on August 3. The 2006 Cadet World Championships, featuring the world’s top 15 and 16-year-old boxers will run from August 3-14.

The team traveling to Turkey is made up of 13 National Champions from the recent Junior Olympic National Championships in Marquette, Mich. Defending World Championships middleweight (165 lbs/75 kg) silver medalist Dominic Wade (Largo, Md.) and bantamweight (119 lbs/54 kg) Roberto Marroquin (Dallas, Texas) will compete in their second World Championships in Turkey. The eleven team members joining the duo are: pinweight (101 lbs/46 kg) national champion Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.); light flyweight (106 lbs/48 kg) national champion Randy Caballero (Coachella, Calif.); flyweight (110 lbs/50 kg) national champion Andre Keys (Tacoma, Wash.); light bantamweight (114 lbs/52 kg) national champion Samuel DiPace (Las Cruces, N.M.); featherweight (125 lbs/57 kg) national champion Manuel de la Cruz (Port Arthur, Texas); lightweight (132 lbs/60 kg) national champion Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.); light welterweight (138 lbs/63 kg) national champion Gerardo Ibarra (Houston, Texas); welterweight (145 lbs/66 kg) national champion Glen Tapia (Passaic, N.J.); light middleweight (154 lbs/70 kg) national champion Luis Arias (Milwaukee, Wis.); light heavyweight (176 lbs/80 kg) national champion David Galmore (Lake Charles, La.); and heavyweight (189 lbs/86 kg) national champion and Aliyev Cup gold medalist Keith Tapia (Bronx, N.Y.).

The team will be lead by USA Boxing National Coaching Director Dan Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo.); Ken Porter (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and Robert Martin (Washington D.C.). Carlos Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.) will serve as team manager for both the training camp and competition.

The team will participate in an extensive training camp in Lake Placid, including training, sparring, interval runs, video study, plyometrics, sports psychology as well as international protocol. The United States won five medals at the 2005 Cadet World Championships, including a gold medal by Isiah Thomas.
