The flyweight division opened the action with three first round contests on Sunday night. 2006 Under 19 National Champion Qa’id Muhammad (Atlantic City, N.J.) enjoyed a victorious U.S. Championships premiere with a 17-11 win over Patrick Amaro (Woodland, Calif.). Muhammad got off to a quick start, taking a 10-3 lead after one round. He held a six-point lead as the fourth round began, and went to win a 17-11 final decision.

2005 Under 19 National Champion Shemuel Pagan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded the upset of the tournament, defeating two-time national champion Mark Davis (Cleveland, Ohio). Following a first round tie, Pagan moved out to a four-point lead at the midway point and never relinquished the advantage. He held a 16-12 lead as the fourth round began, and while Davis cut Pagan’s led in half, he couldn’t overcome his deficit. Pagan went on to win a 22-20 decision and advance to the second round. 2006 U.S. Championships bronze medalist Luis Del Valle (Newburgh, N.Y.) advanced in the tournament as well, recording a 37-18 victory over Eric Alamarino (Concord, Calif.). Alamarino kept it close through the first two rounds, but Del Valle blew the bout open in the third. He took a 24-13 advantage into the final round en route to a 37-18 final victory.

In light welterweight action, two-time national champion Karl Dargan (Philadelphia, Pa.) took his first step toward a third straight title with a third round stoppage over Adam Fusinato (Orange Park, Fla.). He flew out of the gate, taking a 13-1 lead after the first round. He extended his advantage to 17-2 at the midway point before winning the stoppage at the one-minute mark of the third round. Two-time Golden Gloves champion won his opening bout as well, taking a 16-7 decision over Hector Vasquez (Irving, Texas).

2005 Middleweight National Champion Edwin Rodriguez (Worcester, Mass.) won his opening bout of the tournament, taking a 17-5 decision over Jimson Adebusoye (Washington DC). Rodriguez controlled the contest from the second round on, holding a commanding 14-3 lead at the end of three. He went on to take a 17-5 final decision to move on to the second round. Two-time U.S. Championships bronze medalist Shawn Estrada (Downey, Calif.) won his 2007 U.S. Championships opener as well. Estrada faced off with former Junior Olympic champion Keandrae Leatherwood (Tuscaloosa, Ala.). The bout was extremely close through the first two rounds with Estrada taking a 5-4 lead at the midway point. He turned it up in the third round, leading to a stoppage win at the 1:21 mark of the round.

In heavyweight action, 2006 U.S. Championships silver medalist James Zimmerman (San Jose, Calif.) recorded his first win of the tournament, taking a 24-17 victory over Andres Taylor (Johnstown, Pa.). Taylor took the early lead, holding a 5-2 edge after the first round of action. Yet Zimmerman stole the momentum back in the second, taking the lead for good. He went into the final round with a 15-13 lead and built on his advantage to win a 24-17 final decision. 2006 U.S. Championships bronze medallist David Carey (Anchorage, Alaska) put an end to the second day of action with an 11-4 win over Ray Stallings, Jr.  (Princeton, Ind.). Stallings took a slim 2-1 lead after the first round, but Carey stole the advantage in the second stanza. Carey moved out to a 9-3 lead after the third round and held on to his advantage over the final two minutes to win an 11-4 final decision.
