A Message to USA Boxing Membership
by USA Boxing
Dear USA Boxing Members,
USA Boxing appreciates the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) for conducting its Compliance Review and thanks the members of our boxing community who shared their experiences and perspectives. Your input helps us better understand where we need to improve and how we can better serve you.
The USOPC began this review of our grievance and governance practices on April 25, 2025, after members of our community raised concerns about our grievance process. It later expanded the review to include conflicts of interest and the Board's oversight of the organization. The review concluded that USA Boxing has not fully met its obligations in three areas: maintaining fair and timely grievance procedures, managing conflicts of interest, and demonstrating the managerial capability to oversee our sport. We accept these findings. We view this review as an opportunity to learn, strengthen accountability, and improve the organization for our members.
On grievances, our complaint process was not always fully documented, and the wrong burden of proof was applied in specific grievances. On occasion, parties also had limited opportunity to present evidence at Judicial Committee hearings. To the members who raised these concerns, thank you for speaking up. We regret that our process fell short, and we're committed to making it fair for every member. On conflicts of interest, our written policy meets USOPC requirements, but we did not always take the additional steps needed to manage actual and potential conflicts in specific situations. On oversight, the review found a breakdown in the relationship and communication between the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. Effective oversight depends on both, and both are responsible for fixing it.
We have already begun implementing several of the USOPC's requirements and recommendations. Our priorities are to ensure that grievances are handled promptly and fairly, with clear procedures and a meaningful opportunity for members to be heard; strengthen the disclosure and management of conflicts of interest; and improve communication between the Executive Director and the Board while strengthening the Board's oversight of management.
Our shared commitment to Olympic-style boxing, our boxers, and USA Boxing provides a strong foundation for the work ahead. USA Boxing will continue working cooperatively with the USOPC to fulfill the review's requirements and address its recommendations. The Board will oversee implementation of required reforms and adopted recommendations, and the USOPC will continue monitoring our progress.
Our focus remains on supporting boxers, coaches, officials, physicians, clubs, and volunteers, from local gyms to international competitions. Strong governance and fair, consistent processes are essential to that mission.
Thank you for your dedication to USA Boxing and for helping us build a stronger, more accountable organization.
Chris Trombetta
Chair, on behalf of the USA Boxing Board of Directors
