Hill and Mendoza Qualify for 2024 Paris Olympic Games

by Luke Santangelo

Team USA secured two tickets to Paris this morning at the Second 2024 Olympic Games World Qualifying Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand.  Roscoe Hill (Springs, Texas) and Alyssa Mendoza (Caldwell, Idaho) punched their tickets to this summer’s Olympic Games with their unanimous decision victories.

Hill was the first boxer to take the ring this morning and jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first round. Hill’s length and speed caused problems for Gan-Erdene Gankhuyang out of Mongolia the entire bout. Hill did not let up and took the second round 4-1 and the final round 5-0 again leading to a unanimous decision victory.

“It feels good, as I just qualified,” Hill stated after he qualified to Paris. “Thank everyone for supporting me and following me, but the gold medal is next.”

Mendoza completed her impressive run as she won this morning against Maud Van Der Toorn from the Netherlands on another unanimous decision. Mendoza won all her bouts on unanimous decisions and now has punched her ticket to Paris.

‘We did it,” an emotional Mendoza said following her bout. “It was a long journey but I did it. We got the ticket and on to Paris next.”

Jamar Talley (Camden, N.J.) also boxed today but suffered a loss against Georgii Kushitashvili from Georgia. Talley fell short on a 3-2 split decision.

Seven boxers arrived in Thailand representing Team USA , hoping to punch their ticket to this summer’s 2024 Paris Olympic Games under USA Boxing National Head Coach Billy Walsh (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Joining Walsh on the coaching staff are National Resident Coach Timothy Nolan (Rochester, N.Y.), National Development Coach Chad Wigle (Colorado Springs, Colo.), and assistant coaches Adonis Frazier (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Christine Lopez (Rowlett, Texas).
