by USA Boxing
USA Boxing is honored to shine a light on the officials who volunteer their time to grow the sport of Olympic-style boxing. These hard-working officials strive to keep the sport safe and fair for all competitors and play a pivotal role in growing USA Boxing membership annually.
Officials assist boxers across the United States in gain experience while competing at all levels, from grassroots events to national tournaments. The main responsibility of these officials is to ensure that the rules are enforced, boxers are safe, and each bout is contested fairly.
USA Boxing officials are trained to control the action in the ring and ensure boxers are safe at all times during competition. Officials are responsible for closely monitoring boxers' movements and the power of their punches and safely stopping bouts when necessary.
Additionally, a key part of these officials’ responsibilities is judging and scoring bouts during USA Boxing-sanctioned events. USA Boxing uses the Ten-Point System to score each round. It is crucial that these officials score each round independently, unbiased, and fairly, based on their own judgment and observations, as well as USA Boxing scoring criteria.
The USA Boxing scoring criteria is a fair assessment of the bout and relies not only on counting punches but also on the bout's domination, pace and control throughout.
USA Boxing has three levels of officiating, with Level I for beginners and Level III for more advanced and experienced officials. For officials to reach level III status they must maintain the following rules: (1) Be a registered member for at least 3 years and be currently registered, (2) Have been a Level II official for a minimum of 2 years, (3) Officiated at Regional and/or National levels for a minimum of 2 years, (4) Active at LBC Competitions (as defined and published by the R/J Commission) and had satisfactory performance, (5) Attend a designated National Tournament to take the Level III exam and pass with 90% score or better.
USA Boxing officials must also stay active in their LBC and pass a Level III exam at the National Tournaments every two years. Level III officials are required to judge a minimum of 25 Bouts in a national tournament to be counted towards their rankings.
