Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Day 11 Preview

Today will see Oshae Jones (Toledo, Ohio) and Richard Torrez Jr. (Tulare, Calif.) will look for a victory to change the color of their already guaranteed bronze medals. Both boxers will compete in their semifinal bouts, which can be followed along by clicking here.

Jones vs. Hong GuApprox. 1:45 a.m. EST

Jones, the third seed of these Olympic Games, will look to continue her winning ways and making more history, as she will take on the second seed Hong Gu of China in today’s welterweight semifinal bout.

Jones has two wins, both by split decision, thus far in the Games, while Gu has her own two victories, both by unanimous decision.

Gu, who is currently ranked second in the Boxing Task Force Rankings (BTF), is a two-time World Championship silver medalist, as well as a two-time Asian Championships gold medalist.

 

Torrez vs. Kamshybek KunkabayevApprox. 2:15 EST

Like Jones, Torrez is the third seed of the Olympic Games, and he will take on the second seed, Kamshybek Kunkabayev of Kazakhstan, the second seed.

Torrez will be coming into this matchup with an impressive 4-1 victory over Cuba, with momentum on his side, while Kunkabayev enters the semifinal bout after his own 4-1 decision against the Russian Olympic Committee.

Kunkabayev is also the second ranked boxer in the BTF after finishing second at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships, as well as having three second-place finishes this quad at the Asian Championships.
