Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Lightweight Semifinals Preview

by Brian Taylor, USA Boxing

Keyshawn Davis (Norfolk, Va.) has already secured Team USA’s fourth medal of these Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, however, he will look to clinch another victory today to become the third American to advance to their brackets final.

Davis, who became the second professional boxer from the United States to win a medal at an Olympics, has had three impressive victories in Tokyo, including a second-round stoppage of top-seed and 2016 Olympic silver medalist Sofiane Oumiha of France. His opponent, Hovhannes Bachkov of Armenia, has picked up three of his own wins at these Olympic Games, with two of those wins coming by unanimous decision, and the other by 4-1.

Bachkov is competing in his second Olympic Games, after finishing 9th in Rio in the light welterweight division. He is a two-time World Championship bronze medalist and has won two European Championships during his career.

These two are familiar opponents, as they met in the semifinals of the 2019 Elite Men’s World Championships, where Davis took the 4-1 victory to advance to the finals, while Bachkov settled for a bronze medal.

Once again, these two will be battling each other to advance to a final, however, this time, it will be for the biggest final of their lives.

The two will take to the ring during the third bout of the session, at approximately 1:30 a.m. EST and can be watched by
