by Brian Taylor, USA Boxing

USA Boxing announced today Yarisel Ramirez (Las Vegas, Nev.) will be the tenth and final member of Team USA’s Olympic Games Toyko 2020 boxing team that will compete in Tokyo, Japan later this month.

Ramirez joins previous announced
Keyshawn Davis (Norfolk, Va.), Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.), Virginia Fuchs (Houston, Texas), Naomi Graham (Fayetteville, N.C.), Troy Isley (Alexandira, Va.), Delante Johnson (Cleveland, Ohio), Oshae Jones (Toledo, Ohio), Duke Ragan (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Richard Torrez Jr. (Tulare, Calif.). All team nominations are pending United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee approval.

“We are thrilled to have Yarisel round out our team for Tokyo,” said USA Boxing Executive Director
Mike McAtee. “Yarisel has been in this final training camp working extremely hard, waiting for this opportunity if her name were to be called. During this whole process, Yarisel has showed nothing but maturity, determination and the drive to fulfill her Olympic dreams.”

The featherweight (57 kg/125 lbs.) earned valuable ranking points with her bronze medal placement at the 2019 Pan American Games and competing at the 2019 Elite Women’s World Championships, leading to the World Qualification quota allocated spot. Ramirez, who was also a silver medalist at the 2015 Junior World Championships, is making history for USA Boxing as the first female featherweight representative in an Olympic Games for Team USA.

“Through hard work, perseverance and faith, you can live your dreams,” said Ramirez on her naming to the team.

With Ramirez added to the team, this gives Team USA and USA Boxing a place in all five women’s weight divisions that will be contested in Tokyo.

Boxing in Tokyo will begin on Saturday, July 24th (JST). Continue to check and USA Boxing’s social media platforms for up to date information regarding the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
