Lubbock, Texas to Host 2021 National Junior Olympics
by USA Boxing
USA Boxing announced today that Lubbock, Texas will host the 2021 National Junior Olympics, July 7-17, at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.
“Unfortunately the COVID pandemic caused the cancellation of the 2020 National Junior Olympics which were scheduled to take place in Lubbock,” stated Taryn Cass, USA Boxing Events Coordinator, “but our commitment remained and we took that time to continue to build a great relationship between USA Boxing and our tremendous partners at Lubbock Sports & Visit Lubbock and are very excited to be able to host this year’s tournament there.”
This year’s tournament will have a variety of changes, not only to provide more opportunities for our USA Boxing members, but also to help provide a safer environment.
Normally a qualified week-long tournament, this year’s edition will be open registration for boxers in the youth and lower age divisions, with competition spread over 10 days. Boxers in the Junior Olympic age divisions will not have to qualify through local and regional events to compete at the event.
Despite this being an open tournament, USA Boxing, along with JO Regional Coordinators are finding ways to incorporate the same traditions as years past, with an opening ceremony, parade, and medal ceremonies at the end of competition. A plan to keep the spirit of “team competition” alive is also being developed with more information to come in early April.
Registration will open on April 19 and close on June 21. As this is an open tournament we are expecting a large number of participants, so some brackets will have limits. Information on the caps will be released prior to registration opening.
This will mark the 49th edition of the National Junior Olympics and will be the first USA Boxing national tournament hosted in Texas since the 2016 National Junior Olympics were held in Dallas to record numbers.
The tournament will be the sixth year the Prep National Championships have been held in conjunction with the event and the fifth year for the Youth Open.
Additional tournament information, including a fact sheet, will be posted in the coming months.
