USA Boxing releases qualification guidelines for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing

by Brian Taylor, USA Boxing

Today USA Boxing announced the guidelines for boxers to punch their ticket to the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing, which will be held in Dec. 2023. Boxers will have five competition opportunities to qualify, as well as a Wild Card qualification to round out the field.

Full guidelines can be viewed here

The 2024 Olympic Trials will expand the field to include 16 boxers per weight category and will be a single elimination tournament, different from previous editions, which had brackets of eight boxers and was a double elimination tournament.

Although USA Boxing is still waiting for full details to be announced around the process for Olympic qualification, we are excited to announce this new format for the Olympic Trials for Boxing, which will allow for increased participation through six different qualification pathways. Once the full Olympic qualification guidelines are announced, USA Boxing will communicate how that process works with the Olympic Trials and the team selection processes for 2024.

The first qualification pathway will be the upcoming 2022 USA Boxing National Championships in Lubbock, Texas. The top two boxers in the 13 Olympic weight categories will be the first boxers to clinch their spot.

The second opportunity to qualify will be the 2023 USA Boxing National Qualifier, scheduled for March 18-25, 2023, in Detroit, Michigan. Two spots per weight category will be filled by the finalists in the 13 Olympic weight categories from that event.

The third opportunity will be the 2023 National Golden Gloves Championships, held in Philadelphia, Pa., May 8-13. The top two in Olympic weight categories will advance to the finals.

The 2023 USA Boxing Summer Festival will serve as the fourth competition opportunity for boxers to qualify. Held June 3-10 in Lubbock, Texas, and as with the previous events, the top two boxers in each of the 13 Olympic weight categories will advance.

The final competition opportunity for boxers to earn their spot at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials will be at the 2023 USA Boxing Last Chance Qualifier, which is expected to be held in Sept. 2023. The top two boxers in each Olympic weight category will clinch their spots to compete at trials. Final dates and location of the Last Chance Qualifier will be announced in the coming months.

For boxers who do not qualify through one of the five competition opportunities, there will be a Wild Card qualification, which will be used for the first time to round out brackets at an Olympic Trials for Boxing. The number of Wild Card qualification slots per weight category will be determined based on the number of remaining slots available to fill a maximum bracket size of 16 boxers.

Additional information regarding the Wild Card qualification pathway can be found in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing Qualification Guidelines.
