by USA Boxing

Team USA picked up three victories during the first day of boxing at the 2023 International Grand Prix in Ústí nad Labem, Czechia.

Bantamweight Yoseline Perez (Houston, Texas) made an impressive elite international debut to start the day for Team USA, winning after the referee stopped the bout in the first round. Perez, the 2022 Youth World Champion, landed numerous clean power shots to her opponent, resulting in the referee to give back-to-back standing eight counts to Petra Cvoligova of Czechia, before calling the bout after a third eight count was giving. Perez will return to action tomorrow against Ireland’s Jennifer Lehanezse in the quarterfinals.

Morelle McCane (Cleveland, Ohio) picked up another impressive victory to begin her tournament run with the decision over Germany’s Leonie Mueller to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinals against Brazil’s Barbara Dossantos, while light welterweight Emilio Garcia (Laredo, Texas) grabbed his fifth straight international victory to close out the day for Team USA. Garcia took the win over Norway’s Sayeed Kazemi to advance to face Czechia’s Petr Novak tomorrow.

Middleweight Naomi Graham (Fayetteville, N.C.) put up a tough fight against Aoife O’Rourke of Ireland, however, fell short in advancing to see her tournament come to an end.
