Team USA secures eight medals on second day of 2023 Grand Prix

Team USA picked up eight victories during the second day of boxing at the 2023 Grand Prix in Czechia to guarantee the team at least eight bronzes. 


Featherweight Alyssa Mendoza (Caldwell, Idaho) picked up the teams first victory of the day by taking all five judges’ cards over Lucie Sedlakcova of Czechia to advance to today’s semifinal bout against Melissa Mortensen of Denmark. The win clinched Mendoza’s third straight international medal of the year. 

Jordan Roach (Upper Marlboro, Md.), a last-minute replacement in this tournament for Team USA, picked up his first victory in the tournament with a win over Ireland’s Sean Mari, guaranteeing himself his first international medal of his career. Roach will take to the ring today against Dmytro Zamotayev of Ukraine. 


Featherweight Jahmal Harvey (Oxon Hill, Md.) looked impressive in his return to the ring after taking bronze at the Gee Bee Tournament last month in Finalnd. Harvey landed clean jabs and combinations to overtake Jude Gallagher of Ireland to advance to today’s semifinal bout with Denmark’s Frederik Jensen, the gold medalists from the Gee Bee Tournament. 


Omari Jones
(Orlando, Fla.) continued his winning ways from Finland to take the decision over Norway’s Martin Skogheim, who he defeated also in Finland. Jones clinched his second straight international medal and will be stepping into the ring today against 2020 Olympina Damian Durkacz of Poland. 


Super heavyweight Joshua Edwards (Houston, Texas) closed out the day for Team USA with a victory over Delicious Orie of England, the 2022 Commonwealth Games Champion. Edwards took all five judges’ cards to advance to today’s semifinal bout against Germany’s Neivie Tiafack and guarantee himself at least a bronze medal. 


2022 Youth World Champion Yoseline Perez (Houston, Texas) was the other American to step into the ring during the day, however, fell short to Jennifer Lehane of Ireland to advance to the medal rounds in her first elite international tournament, while Emilio Garcia (Laredo, Texas) saw his international win streak end after losing to Petr Novak of Czechia due to a walkover.


Three other members of Team USA, Robby “Rahim” Gonzales (Las Vegas, Nev.), Jennifer Lozano (Laredo, Texas) and Morelle McCane (Cleveland, Ohio), were scheduled to step into the ring, however, won due to walkovers. All three will be in the ring today boxing for a spot in the finals.
