Robby Gonzales Revitalized and Ready to Perform at the 2025 World Boxing Championships
by Luke Santangelo, USA Boxing
Robby "Rahim" Gonzales has been one of Team USA's most dominant boxers in this decade. The 28-year-old is a Las Vegas native whose 2020 Olympic dreams were dashed due to the global pandemic.
Gonzales won the 2020 Olympic Trials, but after the pandemic took the world by storm, he did not get the opportunity to compete in Olympic Qualifiers due to IOC guidelines, and it quickly ended his hopes of competing for the United States at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
With his heart shattered into a million pieces, Gonzales shifted his focus to the 2021 World Championships, just a few months later, and proved to the world he belonged in Tokyo by winning a gold medal in Serbia. Gonzales then went on to dominate over the next two years, winning a combined five medals in 2022 and 2023 to further prepare for the 2024 Olympic Qualifiers.
While Gonzales narrowly missed qualifying in his three events ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, he utilized those setbacks as renewed motivation heading into the 2025 calendar year and the new Olympic cycle. Gonzales was named one of the USA Boxing Elite High Performance Team captains in 2025, and with his mind set on redemption after missing out on the Olympic Games in Paris, he has an opportunity at adding his name to the history books once again.
With a rejuvenated mentality, Gonzales is motivated more than ever to win gold at the inaugural World Boxing Championships. With only a select few being able to win gold at the World Championships, Gonzales eyes greatness and will attempt to accomplish the feat for the second time in his amateur career.
"I must start fast and win that first round," Gonzales stated on how to secure a gold medal in England. "I have to let my hands go and can't wait. I have a great opportunity, and this is a great experience for me. I cherish that first Worlds run. It was amazing, and hopefully, this time I will get the same result as in 2021."
Gonzales has had an excellent international showing so far in 2025, earning two medals in the three events. When he looks ahead to the 2025 World Boxing Championships, using his experience in 2021 as a blueprint, he emphasized his focus on having fun in the ring.
"Don't put too much stress on myself," Gonzales stated. "Have fun and enjoy the moment. Use my experience for the better, and believe in the process and believe in myself."
Gonzales will represent Team USA at the World Boxing Championships in the men’s 80-kilogram division. His journey will begin on September 3, when the tournament’s official bracket draw takes place. There, he will learn his path to gold and see who stands in her way for the prestigious spot atop the podium.
Team USA will be represented by 14 boxers at the 2025 World Boxing Championships, which will take place inside M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England, from September 4 to 14. Each day of the competition will be broadcast live on the World Boxing YouTube channel.
