Team USA Grabs Three Wins During Second Day of 2021 Boxam Tournament

by Brian Taylor, USA Boxing

The second day of boxing at the 2021 Boxam Tournament in Castellón, Spain saw all four American females take to the ring, with three coming out victorious.

Flyweight Virginia Fuchs (Houston, Texas), who won the 2018 edition of the Boxam Tournament, began the day with a strong performance against Spain’s Maria Gonzalez Caceres. Fuchs will return to the ring on Thursday, where she will face Indian legend Mary Kom, a six-time World Champion and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist.

Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) took all five judges’ cards over Valentina Bustamante of Chile to take Team USA’s second win of the day. Ellis, who won bronze at last year’s Boxam Tournament, will face 2019 World Championship bronze medalist Ekaterina Dynnik of Russia in Thursday’s bouts.

Two-time Boxam Tournament Champion Naomi Graham (Fayetteville, N.C.) began her quest to her third Boxam title with a 5-0 decision win over Puerto Rico’s Nisa Rodriguez. Graham will join her Ellis and Fuchs during Thursday’s session, where she will meet Gabriele Stonkute of Lithuania.

The final American to enter the ring today, Andrea Medina (San Diego, Calif.), fell short of advancing to the next round of competition against India’s Jaismine.

Competition will continue tomorrow with Charlie Sheehy (Brisbane, Calif.) in his second fight, while Bruce Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Darius Fulghum (Houston, Texas) and Anthony Herrera (East Los Angeles, Calif.) will be making their tournament debuts. Follow all the action online by
