Team USA Qualifies Three to Finals of 2021 Boxam Tournament
by Brian Taylor, USA Boxing
USA Boxing made a complete 180 following yesterday’s bouts to all three boxers stepping into the ring today winning and advancing to tomorrow’s finals.
Flyweight Virginia Fuchs (Houston, Texas) started the day for Team USA with an impressive win over six-time World Champion and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Mary Kom of India to advance to tomorrow’s championship bout against Russia’s Svetlana Soluianova. A victory for Fuchs tomorrow will make her a two-time Boxam Tournament Champion after winning in 2018.
Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) continued USA Boxing’s strong performance with her own unanimous decision win over Russia’s Ekaterina Dynnik, 2019 World Championships light welterweight bronze medalist. Ellis will step into the ring with Kaur Baath Simranjit of India, a 2018 World Championships light welterweight bronze medalist, during tomorrow’s lightweight finals.
Two-time Boxam Tournament Champion Naomi Graham (Fayetteville, N.C.) closed the day with a 5-0 decision over Lithuania’s Gabriele Stonkute. A win in tomorrow’s championship bout against Pooja Irani of India, a 2020 Olympic Games qualifier, will clinch the middleweights third Boxam title, a similar feat she completed recently just at the 2021 Strandja Tournament last week.
