Hill Dominates in Opening Bout of World Championships

by USA Boxing

Roscoe Hill (Spring, Texas) was the lone member of Team USA to take to the ring during the second day of boxing at the 2021 Elite Men’s World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, and the flyweight did not disappoint.

From the opening round, Hill took control of the fight, taking the first round on all five judges’ cards. The American continued to dominate his opponent in the second round, resulting the referee to give Mario Lavegar Cepeda of Dominican Republic a standing eight count. At the end of the round, Hill was up 19-18 on four cards, and 19-17 on the fifth.

Needing to just continue to control the fight to win his World Championships debut, Hill did not back down against the Dominican, with the referee giving a second eight count before waving off the fight halfway through the third round.

Hill will now have a few days of rest before returning to the ring on Monday, Nov. 1 against 2016 Olympian Artur Hovhannisyan of Armenia.

Team USA will have two boxers make their World Championships debut tomorrow. Obed Bartee-El (Harvest, Ala.) will step into Ring B in the fifth bout of the first session, which begins at 7:00 a.m. EST, while Jonathan Mansour (San Diego, Calif.) will box in bout 5 in Ring A during the second session of the day, set to begin at 12:00 p.m. EST.
