Bartee-El and Talley Advance to Quarterfinals of World Championships
by Brian Taylor, USA Boxing
Team USA’s win streak continued during day seven of the 2021 Elite Men’s World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, resulting in two boxers securing their place in the quarterfinals.
Light middleweight Obed Bartee-El (Harvest, Ala.) picked up his third win of the championships following his 4-1 decision victory over 2020 Olympian Arman Darchinyan of Armenia.
The first round of the bout saw Darchinyan take the 3-2 lead, however, Bartee-El came back much stronger in the second and third round. The American grabbed the second round by 4-1, before taking all five judges’ cards in the final round to take the 4-1 final decision. Bartee-El will face Azerbaijan’s Sarkhan Aliyev on Tuesday.
Heavyweight Jamar Talley (Camden, N.J.) secured his place in the quarterfinals with another strong performance in his second bout of the tournament.
Talley took all five judges’ cards in the first round, as well as in the second round, however, received a point deduction for lowering his head too many times. In the end, the point deduction still did not allow his opponent, Andrei Zaplitni of Moldova, to take advantage of, with the American once again taking all five judges’ cards to take the unanimous decision victory. Talley will join Bartee-El in Tuesday’s sessions, where he will face Spain’s 2020 Olympian, Emmanuel Reyes.
Tomorrow will be a busy day for Team USA, as five boxers will look to join Bartee-El and Talley in their respective quarterfinals. Full bout sheets and livestream can be found here.
