OLHA Wins PhRMA CAREs 2025 Grant to Boost Health Insurance Literacy for Southern California Boxing Families
The Organization for Latino Health Advocacy (OLHA) has been awarded the PhRMA CAREs 2025 grant for its groundbreaking initiative to improve health insurance literacy and access to medicines in Southern California’s boxing communities.
In partnership with USA Boxing, OLHA will deliver bilingual, culturally relevant health insurance literacy and advocacy workshops to youth boxers ages 12-17. These workshops will equip youth athletes and their families with the knowledge to navigate health insurance, access affordable medicines, and confidently manage their healthcare.
“When families understand their health insurance benefits, they are better positioned to prevent illness, manage chronic conditions, and achieve better health,” said Jeanette Contreras, OLHA Executive Director.
“Boxing gyms build strength and community. Through this partnership, we can further empower families with the knowledge to live healthier lives,” added Mike McAtee, USA Boxing CEO/Executive Director.
OLHA will also conduct community-based research to uncover ongoing barriers to insurance coverage, informing future advocacy and policy recommendations to advance health equity. This scalable project aims to serve as a model for other regions to promote public health and improve access to care in underserved communities.
