Ellis advances at 2022 World Championships

by Brian Taylor, USA Boxing

Lightweight Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) advanced to the second round in her weight division following a dominating performance over Croatia’s Marija Malenica.

Ellis took an early lead after the first round, which saw all five judges’ score the round 10-9. The 2019 Elite Women’s World Championships bronze medalist extended her lead after a dominating second round where she used her jab and multiple punch combinations and body shots that resulted in 10-8 scores across the board.

With her commanding lead, Ellis closed out the bout with another four 10-8 scores to easily take the unanimous decision to set up a third matchup with Venezuela’s Krisandy Rios.

Jennifer Lozano (Laredo, Texas) faced a tough opponent in Uzbekistan’s Aziza Yokubova, however, fell short of advancing following Yokubova taking the unanimous decision victory.

Today will see one American,
Morelle McCane (Cleveland, Ohio) step into the ring with Turkey’s Sema Caliskan, which will see the winner advance to the quarterfinals. McCane will be the first bout in Ring A, which is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. ET.
