Joliet Boxing Sensation Will Represent USA in 2028 Olympics: Mayor D'Arcy Predicts
On Monday afternoon, Joliet Patch published a Facebook Live Interview featuring Joliet's star boxer, 18-year-old Joseph "Jojo" Awinongya, as he met with Joliet Mayor Terry D'Arcy. Awinongya will be flying to Germany in July as he continues in his relentless pursuit of making the 2028 U.S. Olympics boxing team. After boxing in Germany, Jojo told Joliet Patch he will head to Canada in late september for more boxing competitions as he sets his sights on the U.S. Olympics.
Las Cruces Amateur Boxer Joscelyn Olayo-Munoz Among Nation's Best Fighters for Team USA
Joscelyn Olayo-Munoz's rise to the top of amateur boxing in the United States has been an extraordinary journey but not unexpected because of her passion and love for the sport. The 17-year-old Olayo-Munoz, who recently graduated from Las Cruces High School and trains at the Dona Ana Boxing Gym, was named captain of USA Boxing's Youth High Performance team after participating in team trials at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in May. The Las Cruces, New Mexico, native made the Youth High Performance team for the second consecutive year.
Legacies Live On: Young Alaskans from Fighting Families Earn Boxing Medals at Junior Olympics
Alaska isn't historically heralded as one of the country's hotbeds for young boxing talent. However, over the past decade-plus, many of the best young Alaska athletes in the sport have hailed from the Alaska Boxing Academy and blossomed under the tutelage of owner and coach David Carey. Three more young boxers recently added their names to his growing list of success stories after medaling at the 2025 USA Boxing Junior Olympics last month.
