by Luke Santangelo

Roscoe Hill (Spring, Texas) and Jamar Talley (Camden, N.J.) advance to their qualifying bouts and continue their dominant run. Hill and Talley are now just one win away from punching their tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Emilio Garcia (Laredo, Texas) fell 5-0 in his qualifying bout to Oier Ibarrechee out of Spain. However, his journey toward Paris is not over, and he will now compete in the first round of the box off bracket tomorrow against Alexandru Paraschiv out of Moldova.

There will be four boxers competing in the box off. The two winners from Saturday, June 1, will then move on to the box off qualifying round and will compete for the fifth and final Olympic ticket Sunday, June 2.

Following Garcia, Roscoe Hill went up against a familiar opponent, Huthaifa Eshish from Jordan. Hill went down 3-2 in the first round but bounced back in the second round with a dominant round and won 5-0. Hill dominant round led to a 4-1 victory and he now advanced to the qualifying bout.  The Texas native will represent Team USA against Gan-Erdene Gankhuyags out of Mongolia on Sunday in hopes of punching his ticket to Paris.

“He came out strong and I wasn’t expecting it,” Hill stated after his victory Friday morning. “One more to go. I am going on to the next round.”

Jamar Talley rounded out the day for Team USA as he picked up another powerful win in his second Olympic World Qualification Tournament. Talley dominated every round from the start. He gave Regarn Simbwa out of Uganda an eight count in the second round which led to a dominant round including a 10-8 score.  Talley landed a hard right hook in the final round again and gave Simbwa another eight count. Talley would go on to win on another unanimous decision, 5-0.

Team USA will see three boxers tomorrow in hopes of securing their spot in their qualifying bout. Starting off the day will be Shera Mae Patricio (Waianae, Hawaii) as she will go head-to-head with Johana Gomez from Venezuela. Alyssa Mendoza (Caldwell, Idaho) will follow as she will face Anastasiia Molochko out of Ukraine. And Lastly Emilio Garcia will box in the first round of the box off in hopes of advancing to the final round. He will go against Alexandru Paraschiv out of Moldova.
